BOURBON'S TRUTHS

Tom Waits

Tom Waits, the cracked voice of America and the one who lend that voice to seedy and desperate characters without, however, a sense of humor full of vitality, troubadour of impossible stories, ugly and tender at the same time, the underground clown who unmasks reality with a gesture of brazen freedom, the intelligent jester with his dazzlingly humanity. Tom Waits, versatile and unique. Tom Waits, the actor who sets a world inspired by film noir, the writer who puts music to the alternative poetry by Allan Ginsberg or William Burroughs, the stage director who compete with Bob Wilson creating dreamlike and surreal spaces. Tom Waits, the poet.

His music seems to be made for apprentices of loser, for those who have been abandoned and finish their glasses of liqueur off when the bar has already closed, for those who believe that happiness has to be brief and fierce, for those who feel running down their veins the ardor of temptation and never dare to succumb to it, for those who devour with their eyes the fruit that will never be theirs. But that is the mere appearance of the work of this artist. Tom Waits, I firmly believe, speaks to us all. To all who wants to listen. And, really, once you've entered his world, is a real pleasure to listen to.

It was hard to pick three themes this time. We chose three albums, nowadays mythic: Rain Dogs, which illuminates the marginal corners of New York with polkas, ballads and blues with the masterly support of Keith Richards on guitars. Dissonant rhythms and surreal and imaginative lyrics which identify each other to create a dark and attractive world, with the force of chaos. Franks Wild Years, a contemporary opera that speaks of those impulses that we cannot overcome, a ghostly vision of the Prodigal Son created on gypsy dances and circus marches, with a rhythm section by Michael Blair, a magician of the drums; and Small Change with a jazz trio composed by the tenor saxophonist Lew Tabackin, the bassist Jim Hughart, and the drummer Shelly Manne, plus an occasional string section.

The themes, Time, a melancholic and beautiful ballad, Temptation, which invokes an opera singer street announcing the disadvantages of the excess of will and Tom Traubert's Blues, which interprets reality or realities in their own way, with the alcoholic vision from the one who cannot be separated from the piano in the middle of the dawn. But maybe it's just a trap. Tom Waits himself warns us in another memorable song of the same album: The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me).
